Mike Courtney – City Commission Candidate

FOR A MONDAY, May 12th, RELEASE
May 12th, 2025

Lawrence, KS — Today, Mike Courtney, a small business owner and parent, has announced his candidacy for the Lawrence City Commission. Courtney will focus on the growing economic challenges that will shape our community into the future.

“In 25 years, I want to look back and say that we did everything we could so our children can live here, work here, and put down their own roots, without having to leave.

We are at an inflection point. We need to address the financial difficulties and affordability of our community. If we do not, then we will not only price out the current generation of young Lawrencians, but our children, as well.”

I will fight every day to make this town more affordable for you and your family.”

Mike will focus on the following policies:

  1. Affordable Housing + Zoning – Infill is not enough to address our housing crisis. New precision-engineered homes can be built for a fraction of the cost.
  2. Municipal Utilities – We need to provide relief to Lawrencians who have seen their municipal utility payments skyrocket since the pandemic.
  3. Parks – We should avoid charging fees for our parks and green spaces. Instead, we should encourage community leadership using the library’s successful model.

Courtney has shown this bold leadership at multiple organizations. “I have built innovative solutions while at multiple startups and Nvidia. I look forward to addressing our city’s challenges and ask that you join us on this journey.”

Courtney will kick off his campaign with a meetup on Sunday, May 18th, at 1-2:30 at Prairie Park. The family-friendly event will feature an opportunity for residents to share their priorities for the city’s future.
